Mr. John Boughton came to St. James High in 1963, after having served in the US Army for 3 years. He was hired as an assistant coach, but became head coach halfway through the season when the head coach had to take medical leave. Coach Boughton would lead the Wildcats to the 1966 State Championship. He secured 5 district championships in his 6 seasons recording 48 wins, 13 loses, 7 ties and was named Coach of the year for Class B in 1966.
In 1969, with the school system still struggling through the turmoil of integration, Coach Boughton was asked to take on a new job – principal of the newly formed St. James High School Boys’ Division (All Boys - Magnolia High). A strong leader respected and sometimes feared among the students, Coach Boughton was a smart choice to fill the position.
In 1975, he became principal for the combined boys’ and girls’ school, we were now and forevermore St. James High School – under the leadership of John Boughton.
